Since its inception, the Foundation has centred its actions on four core themes that reflect central questions in Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s life and work. Our themes are inclusive from all perspectives and often intertwined, encouraging interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. The Foundation\u2019s work centres on the humanities and social sciences but with a sizeable disciplinary understanding of possible connections and inputs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The research and activities of <\/span>our community members clearly<\/span> show <\/span>that <\/span>the definitions of <\/span>human rights and dignity extend far beyond <\/span>the purely<\/span> legal issues<\/span> of <\/span>our times<\/span>. Civil, political, <\/span>economic<\/span> and social rights are being challenged as societal values and expectations are put to the test. R<\/span>esearch projects <\/span>are<\/span> not merely ask<\/span>ing<\/span> the usual questions about marginalized <\/span>groups but<\/span> dar<\/span>e<\/span> to address the issue of traditional power (<\/span>im<\/span>)balances <\/span>while<\/span> propos<\/span>ing<\/span> solutions to remedy them. <\/span>Perceptions<\/span> and assumptions are <\/span>being <\/span>challenged <\/span>along with<\/span> the <\/span>traditional responses to age-old questions.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Responsible Citizenship<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The functioning of a society <\/span>as a whole depends<\/span> on its constituent parts. Local, <\/span>national<\/span> and global distinctions <\/span>seem <\/span>to be<\/span> blurring<\/span> in a<\/span> society that is becoming<\/span> increasingly globalized while <\/span>simultaneously<\/span> facing protectionist movements. The public and private responsibilities that previously defined <\/span>how <\/span>society<\/span> works<\/span> are becoming <\/span>less and less<\/span> clear. <\/span>And <\/span>y<\/span>et communications are multiplying and <\/span>dispersing<\/span>, <\/span>a trend that <\/span>reflects<\/span>\u00a0the <\/span>calling into question<\/span> of the civic system as such. The proliferation of misinformation further complicates and erodes social <\/span>interaction<\/span>. Democratic processes are <\/span>coming <\/span>under pressure and giving rise to new movements and collaborations. The concept of citizenship around the world will depend on the ability of societies and their <\/span>constituent parts <\/span>to <\/span>confront<\/span> new challenges and <\/span>reallocate<\/span> responsibilities.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

        Canada and the World<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

        Today more than ever, <\/span>Canada<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s place and role in the world are <\/span>front and<\/span> cent<\/span>re<\/span> in<\/span> our <\/span>collective thinking. Canada<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s global role does not depend solely on its relations with its southern neighbo<\/span>u<\/span>r; its <\/span>participation<\/span> in economic, military, political, environmental, cultural, <\/span>religious<\/span> and other <\/span>matters<\/span> is also more <\/span>crit<\/span>ical<\/span> than ever for Canada as a country. Artificial intelligence shows that <\/span>there are <\/span>really no longer<\/span> any <\/span>barriers, while biases, polarization and radicalization are alive<\/span> and well<\/span>. <\/span>Canada has a <\/span>plethora of<\/span> roles to play and contributions to make<\/span>, <\/span>both at home and abroad.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

          People and their Natural Environment<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

          T<\/span>he relationship between the environment, economic power and self-determination is increasingly being challenged as dialogue <\/span>broadens<\/span> and understanding grows about the role that<\/span>, among others,<\/span> I<\/span>ndigenous peoples<\/span> play in preserving the environment. Research is not limited to the impact of climate change, but also examines its political, social, <\/span>technological<\/span> and economic <\/span>implications<\/span>. <\/span>Members of our community<\/span> are currently <\/span>looking at<\/span> the link between climate change and the economy<\/span>,<\/span> raising questions about ecocide and urban <\/span>spaces<\/span> and <\/span>exploring<\/span> the relationship between public health and Indigenous knowledge. Environmental rights, <\/span>ecological<\/span> stewar<\/span>d<\/span>ship<\/span> and the impact of climate change on migration are <\/span>further<\/span> topics <\/span>bei<\/span>ng researched<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
